Chineham Arms Hungry for Woodland
Despite being rebuffed in the past, Fuller Smith & Turner PLC, the owners of the Chineham Arms, are intent on expanding the accommodation at their Chineham premises. "But where?", you may well ask, not least given the shortage of parking on the site.
Well, the brilliant idea is to build a series of between 6 and 12 chalet style bedrooms across some of the parking bays, and in the latter case onto the lawn area beside the pub. In order to facilitate the scheme, the brewery wishes to purchase a chunk of Little Baker's Copse so that there would be an improved interface with the woodland.
This is not yet a planning application as the company is at this stage only endeavouring to establish the viability of purchasing the necessary land from the borough, in advance of submitting a planning application. The company explains: "We certainly would not wish to chop down all the trees but simply create a bit of open space. We would then in turn actively manage the woodland." They add, "We are aware that parking overflow from the pub is currently a problem for the local residents and we will hopefully be shortly converting the rear yard at the pub to provide additional customer parking."
Following a site visit, Cllr Martin Biermann has expressed vigorous opposition to disposal of any part of the copse and this has been firmly endorsed by Cllr Elaine Still.
The picture below shows the parking bays which would be sacrificed as well as possibly a major part of the grassed area beyond.
