What about this then....

we have two lines & both have had adsl on.
Currently one line is giving 4m from O2 @ £7.50pcm and the other 2m from BT -costing, let just say lots more!
Having approached O2 to provide the other connection they say that, according to their systems, its not suitable for broadband!!

Is this BT giving out duff information or what?

*off to try find another supplier*

Why is it that different providers can/cant supply.
If a line works then surely anyone can supply?

I once had a problem that my neighbour had broundband but I couldn't get it because I was 'too far away from the exchange'.

I can do better than that. I have two lines into my house as I run a business. Both lines are broadband enabled one with BT the other with O2. I had changed to O2 from BT as an experiment to see how it worked and then asess it against BT. It works well, very very well. So much so that I telephoned O2 to ask whether they could transfer the other line as well freeing me from BT. The reply that I received somewhat startled me. They stated that they could not offer broadband on the second number beacuse it was too far from the exchange. I still haven't got to grips with that.

The latest broadband offering from BDBC

http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/business/news/broadband

This provides a link to check what you should be able to receive broadband wise and also to report problems to HCC.

Apparently there are issues in Chineham and Kempshott - let the powers that be know if you have any problems as it might just help to get the wires untangled!

Seedoubleu, were you able to get another O2 broadband connection. Actually I wanted to switch my broadband recently from SKY to O2 and I got the same response that O2 can’t provide connection to my house. Even though I have a broadband with SKY!

Hi. I did manage to convince O2 that the second line would work and they did agree to transfer the line from BT. That was as far as I took it only becuase I was a little wary of having both connections from the same source. Past experience tells me it is better to spread the risk as if O2 have a connection issue, it may well effect both lines and put me under a bit of pressure. I would howver still highly recommend the O2 service as being the best that I have ever come across. I have had a few issues with connection at various times but O2 have always come up trumps in both response times, customer service and the speed in which they resolve the matter. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. That is a very rare thing for me!!!

Thanks a lot for your response. O2 broadband has very good reviews from the users, hopefully I’ll be able to convince them……

The way that I tackled it was to tell them mine was a line supplied by BT and that generally I had a speed of 2Meg. They had this line registered as not being able to get any form of broadband and not worth connection. If you let them know that you currently have broadband and the speed that you get they may just take another look. I know that the guy that I spoke to had to go and discuss it all with the tech dept. He came back to me about a day after my initial enquiry. But at least he did come back!!!!

Seedoubleu, thanks a lot. Same thing happened with me when I called O2 yesterday. Guy from technical department called me and I explained to him that I am already using sky broadband. The were agreed to provide me new connection, now just waiting for the MAC code from sky.
I think O2 has a policy that if distance between house and exchange is more than 5KM then they do not promise of any speed. Anyway thanks for your help.

Hi Basharat

I hope that by now you have your MAC code. BT issue these whilst you are on the phone to them but I also know that other suppliers are a little reticent to give them out. I don't personally know what SKY are like at this, but I hope all runs smoothly for you now!!
